Civil Engineering Summer Intern

The Village of North Aurora’s Public Works Department is looking for student applicants to be part of their temporary, summer seasonal staff. This position will be responsible for supporting the engineering division of the Public Works Department in the planning, designing, administration, and construction of capital improvement and maintenance projects. This position may be required to perform construction inspection, assist in design engineering, participate on survey crews, prepare CAD drawings and collect data and research. Working conditions may be performed in outdoor conditions and/or near vehicular traffic.

Applicants must be eligible for employment in the U.S., possess a valid Illinois Driver’s License, and pass a pre-employment background check and medical and drug screening.  Applicants must be 18 years of age, pursing a degree in Civil Engineering at an accredited college or university and ideally be in their second year of study of higher.  Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel; AutoCAD, GIS systems and ability to learn other software programs preferred.

The hourly rate for this position is will be approximately $15 per hour dependent on qualifications and the position will work approximately forty (40) hours per week with overtime possible. It is estimated that this position will work approximately from late-May through August but some flexibility with scheduling will be provided.

Temporary Public Works Summer Assistance

The Village of North Aurora’s Public Works Department is looking for an individual to be part of their temporary, summer seasonal staff.  This position will be responsible for the maintenance of flower plantings including watering, fertilization, and weed removal. This position may also be required to perform light landscaping, mowing, park and roadside trash collection, assistance with logistics for special events and other duties as assigned. The position may operate automotive and seasonal equipment including but not limited to light trucks, golf cart-type service vehicles and other Village equipment. Working conditions may include working next to busy roads, variable weather conditions and include some public interaction. Position may be required to work some weekend hours depending on the weather.

The hourly pay for this position is $13-$15 per hour dependent on qualifications and the position will work approximately thirty (30) hours per week. It is estimated that this position will work approximately from June through September but some flexibility with scheduling will be provided. Position reports to the Streets Superintendent.

Planner

The Village of North Aurora, Illinois (est. population 18,500) located in Kane County is seeking qualified applicants for the newly created, full-time position of Planner in the Community Development Department, reporting to the Community and Economic Development Director.

The Village of North Aurora is situated along the Fox River and I-88 with Randall Road, Rt. 31, Rt. 25 and Rt. 56 running through portions of the Village’s boundaries. The approximate square miles of the Village are 7.73. The Village has a mix of residential, commercial and industrial uses which have developed into a diversified and strong tax base. The Village has seen very strong growth over the last several years with new residential subdivisions of all housing types, mixed-use developments, new commercial development along key corridors and industrial warehouse development. The Village maintains boundary agreements to guide future land development in a responsible manner and has significant land either annexed or un-annexed available for further development into the future. The Village is also in the process of combining portions of existing TIF Districts into a new TIF District that will help provide assistance for future development.

The Village is seeking a motivated Planner who would be responsible for reviewing building permits requiring zoning review, responding to inquiries regarding land-uses determinations, assist with reviewing and updating the  Village’s Comprehensive Plan, assisting with the analysis and coordination of TIF requests, preparing and processing  special use and variance petitions, preparing materials for Plan Commission and Village Board meetings, assisting with the preparation of text amendments to the zoning code and working with the Village development team. The position will be required to attend monthly Plan Commission meetings and may be required to attend other Village meetings as well.

Qualified candidates must be detail-oriented, organized and able to multi-task, possess excellent analytical, interpersonal and communication skills and work professionally with developers, Department Heads, staff, elected and appointed officials and citizens of the community.  A Bachelor’s Degree in Urban Planning or related field is required. A Master’s Degree in Planning, Public Administration or related field is preferred.  A minimum of two (2) years of related experience is required, four (4) years of related experience preferred.  The ideal candidate will have the ability to read and interpret maps, use GIS systems, read and interpret complex zoning codes, annexation agreements and other planning documents.

The annual salary range for this position is $58,677 to $83,450 and is based on a ten (10) step salary schedule.  Starting salary and step is dependent on qualifications and the position is exempt under FLSA guidelines.  The Village offers an excellent benefit package including health insurance, life insurance, vacation leave, holiday leave, sick leave, and participation in the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund (IMRF). There is no residency requirement for the position.
