Suicidal Subject / Officer-Involved Shooting

Suicidal Subject / Officer-Involved Shooting
August 22, 2019

North Aurora, IL – On Wednesday, August 21, 2019 at approximately 11:17 p.m., officers of the North Aurora Police Department were dispatched to the area of the 600 block of Birchwood Dr. for a suicidal subject. Officers were advised that the 54 year old male subject was driving a gold Lincoln Navigator and was believed to be armed with a handgun. Officers responded to the area and were further advised that the subject was making suicidal statements and threatening to shoot someone.

At approximately 11:37 p.m., an officer saw the suspect driving in his vehicle in the area of Timber Oaks Dr. & Eastview Rd. Officers attempted to stop the subject but he did not stop until pulling into his driveway in the 600 block of Birchwood Dr.

Officers observed that the subject had a handgun and was holding it to his head. The subject exited his vehicle, was moving toward the occupied residence attempting to gain entry through the open garage door, and ignored multiple commands to stop. Fearing for the safety of the individuals in the house, an officer fired one round, striking the suspect, who fell to the ground.

Officers began lifesaving efforts until paramedics arrived and transported the subject to AMITA Health Mercy Medical Center in Aurora, where he later died at 12:35 a.m. A handgun was recovered at the scene.

The officer involved is a 13 year veteran of the North Aurora Police Department and, per policy, has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the investigation of this incident.

The Kane County Major Crimes Task Force is leading the investigation.
