Teen Public Safety Academy

We are excited to announce our first Teen Public Safety Academy, a joint effort between the North Aurora Fire Protection District and North Aurora Police Department. The Academy will be held 8:00 a.m. to 1:30pm from Monday, June 5th through Friday, June 9th, 2023 at the police and fire stations.  There is no cost to attend the Academy.

The goals of the program are to build engagement with the youth in our community, introduce them to potential career opportunities, and provide an overview of police and fire department operations. Participants will receive a fun, hands-on experience as well as an Academy t-shirt. Some of the police topics to be covered (subject to change) are:

  • Hiring procedures / applicant screening / dangers of social media
  • Patrol duties / vehicles / equipment / tour of station
  • Investigations & evidence collection
  • Building searches
  • Use of force
  • Traffic stops
  • Police canine & SWAT demonstrations

Some of the fire topics to be covered are:

  • Personal protective equipment / self-contained breathing apparatus
  • Engine / truck equipment / extinguishers / hoses & hydrants
  • Burn cell / fire investigations
  • Technical rescue
  • Extrication
  • EMS / helicopter landing

Lunch will be provided each day and offer students the opportunity to get to know fellow students and public safety personnel. Parents are invited to attend lunch & graduation on Friday, June 9th, noon to 1:30 p.m. A full schedule with drop-off locations will be sent to students and parents prior to the start of the class.
