Village of North Aurora Celebrates National Library Week!
Happy National Library Week! 🥳📖 The Village of North Aurora joined forces with our friends at Messenger Public Library to celebrate with Village employees sharing favorite books! MPL has been posting daily (with super handy links!) to staff selections and we’re grouping them here for your enjoyment too. What’s your favorite book?
“What’s Wrong With My Plant?” by David Deardorff
Mayor Gaffino is a landscaper and one of his favorite books reflects his profession. Mayor Gaffino said it’s a great book on plant issues and as with many aspects of life, if you can see the problem then you can work on fixing it!
“Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” by Douglas Adams
Community Development Director Nathan Darga said he first read the “Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” and loved it. He went on to read all five books in what he called the “increasingly inaccurately named Hitchhikers Guide trilogy,” and that the series was one of the few that actually made him laugh so hard he had to set the book down! He bought the composite collection (pictured here) so he could have it on his shelf forever.
“The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” by Mark Twain
Community Relations Coordinator Natalie Stevens loves classic literature (she was of course an English major in college) and one of her favorites is “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn,” which she first read in high school and has very fond memories of the classroom discussions of the book. She re-reads it every year (you can see it’s clearly well-loved!) and she hilariously resonates with Aunt Sally in the “spoon” scene!
“More Stories of the Old Duck Hunters” by Gordon MacQuarrie and “The Old Man and the Boy” by Robert Ruark
Public Works Foreman Todd Murphy said his passion in life is duck hunting and noted that there is a specific season for such things and he can’t obviously always be duck hunting. So the next best thing is reading books about it, and MacQuarrie is one of his favorite authors. He said the appreciation of the experience the author shows is what gets duck hunters up in the morning and reading his stories is like being a little boy again and sitting on his grandfather’s knee and listening to him tell stories again. Which comes full circle to his other favorite book, which focuses on those exact themes!
“The Archer’s Tale” by Bernard Cornwell
Sergeant Mike Robinson said that this is one of the few books he’s read multiple times and that anyone interested in medieval historical fiction needs to try this author. Sergeant Robinson has read most of Cornwell’s books and noted the author has a series on Netflix that’s not half bad too!
“Problem Oriented Policing” by Herman Goldstein
Community Service Officer Frank Ambrose’s favorite book holds deep personal significance as it was introduced to him by his mentor and embodies the essence and principles of effective police work. CSO Ambrose is currently pursuing his Master’s degree and is on a promising path towards a career in law enforcement.
For full disclosure, as amazing as Pawfficer Zelda is she cannot actually read 😉 But she would like to recommend the petting of dogs while the humans are reading for a complete win-win situation!
